Chia, a member of the mint family, grows primarily in southern Mexico and South America, however, it is also grown in south Texas and Arizona. Chia seeds were a component of the Aztec and Mayan diets, and the basic survival ration of Aztec warriors - supposedly, one tablespoon of the seeds could sustain a person for 24 hours.
